Advice to teachers or parents
The workbooks of the Intensive Reading Programs are designed to be used in a particular way, with great emphasis being placed on reaching daily and weekly targets, charting progress and so on. Descriptions of all aspects of the program and instructions for best implementation are included in the Teacher's Manual.

Primary Intensive Reading Programs

Student Workbook Level 1, Unit 6
For the purposes of using the sample unit of work, the student is expected after 4 lessons (or 1 week) to be able to read correctly 60 or more words from the list, with no more than 2 errors, in one minute. If the 4 columns are completed, the student returns to the beginning and continues reading until 60 seconds have elapsed.

The student would also be expected to know the meaning of all 60 words, be able to complete the close exercises containing the words and read fluently, sentences containing the list words.

Primary Support Material

Sample Chapter of Work from Activity Book
Primary Activity Books are set out in chapters, which correlate with the chapters of the corresponding novel. The following sample chapter is taken from the Mickey Meets Mac Activity book, which is for Level 1 and supports the concepts and language taught in Student Workbook Level 1 of the Primary Intensive Reading Programs. Support material can be used independently of the reading programs if desired and is suitable for the regular classroom, the special reading class, or at home.

Secondary Intensive Reading Programs

Student Workbook A, Unit 1

The following sample chapter is taken from the King of the Mountain Activity book and provides comprehensive exercises directly related to the King of the Mountain novel (R. Harvey, 2002)

It also reinforces the concepts and language taught in Student Workbook A or B of the Secondary Intensive Reading Programs. Support material may be used in the regular classroom, the special reading class, or at home.

The book is simple enough for upper primary, but essential for all secondary students and adults whose knowledge of everyday grammar is inadequate, eg he played good, me and him went out, I done my assignment, he should of did his work, he alid on the couch, I bought ten tomatoe's, etc.
